Your ‘tone of voice’ or vocal delivery can make – or break – your argument, message, question, or anything you’re trying to articulate. I’ve acquired this through my years of doing one-on-one interviews with international A-listers, and throughout my career in the media space.
- Never be monotonous! Mistaken are those who tell you to speak in "one tone" - just to be safe. Every part of your sentence could use a separate emphasis (depending on context - but even political news presenters apply this!)
- Always be mindful of the subject you are delivering. Control the volume and pace to suit the content and context of your message.
- Align your tone with the emotional undertone of your message (hype it up when something eccentric is about to unfold, be quieter and slower when needed).
- Pauses can redefine everything. A fraction-of-a-second breath hold can leave an impact in ways you can't imagine!
Incorporating these techniques into your daily interactions can transform the way you are perceived and enhance the effectiveness of your communication. Start incorporating these elements and notice the difference in your next meeting or presentation (whether it’s oral, online, in-person or on-air)!
